Fundo de Maneio participates in the DETOUR project

Healthier lifestyles are emerging. The proactive search for physical, mental and social well-being is driving new consumer behaviors at various levels, including tourism, food, exercise and even work. Wellness tourism, in particular, is growing very significantly, above the general tourism sector.

FUNDO DE MANEIO, a company located in Ponta Delgada, is part of a transnational project recently approved under the ERASMUS+ program, which aims to promote business opportunities, as well as the development of education and professional training in the wellness tourism sector.

The project 'DETOUR' - Destinations: Wellbeing Tourism Opportunities for Regions, led by the Center for Recreation and Tourism Research, will last for two years, starting in the fourth quarter of 2019. The initiative also involves partners from Scotland, Iceland, Denmark, Ireland and Slovenia. It aims to raise awareness and strengthen the skills base of young people and adults who work or intend to work in the well-being sector. It is intended to capitalize on current and future opportunities in wellness tourism, in order to drive sectorial innovation, business diversification and regional economic growth.

Azores: an investor’s guide to sustainable tourism

Azores: an investor's guide to sustainable tourism is promoted by the Luso-American Foundation for Development in partnership with the consultant Fundo de Maneio, with the goal of contributing to the development of the tourism in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, ensuring, simultaneously, its most distinctive feature: sustainability.

In general, Azores: an investor's guide to sustainable tourism includes information presented in an objective and concise manner, seeking to identify and characterize determining factors in the decision process of potential investors. It is a very comprehensive document that addresses a number of issues that have a direct impact on any investment decision, including the current legal and fiscal framework. The aim is thus to reduce the risk involved in new initiatives to be implemented in the Azores, recognizing that this is an emerging destination with immense potential to achieve excellence in sustainable tourism.

NaTOUReza Project – Outputs

The NaTOUReza project is an initiative of Fundo de Maneio, financed through PO AZORES 2020, within the tourism sector. The project's outputs are available at www.fundodemaneio.com/natoureza, where the information about Azores tourism can also be found. Among the available tools are:

Azores in Europe: The impact of the Structural Funds

The main goal of the study «Azores in Europe: The impact of the Structural Funds», carried out by the Fundo de Maneio and promoted by the Luso-American Foundation for Development (FLAD), is to reflect on the milestone of the three decades of Portugal's adhesion to the then, European Economic Community (1986-2016) and, consequently, the Autonomous Region of the Azores. Over these 30 years, several million euros have been channeled from community funds to the Region, and it is expected that this mobilization will reach, in total, around 5.000 million euros by 2020. Therefore, it’s natural to have the need to understand its impact on society and the economy. This need is, above all, a function of a paradigmatic moment that reflects the weight of a deep economic and financial crisis and prospects for new opportunities and challenges in the short and medium term, namely with the 2014-2020 community programming period; the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy that included the extinction of milk quotas; the implementation of a new air transport model in the Azores; and critical decisions regarding the operation of the Lajes Base.

The study allows us to conclude that there has been great social, economic and territorial cohesion evolution, although structural challenges that have persisted for several decades still do. On the one hand, the European Structural and Investment Funds produced strong impacts on wealth creation, job creation, opening to the outside world and the emergence of market opportunities, improving the quality of life and prosperity of the population, in infrastructure and the promotion of sustainable development, revealing a high multiplier effect of public expenditure in the regional economy. It should be noted, for example, that the GDP per capita increased tenfold between 1986 and 2013, the emigration rate is very close to 0% (after having already registered 13.8% in 1989), the ratio of inhabitants per doctor is close to of 430 when in 1986 it surpassed 740 and the average life expectancy at birth already surpasses 77 years. There has also been a very positive evolution in the preparation, management and execution of the structural funds, guaranteeing concrete responses to very specific challenges in the Region, while complying with community goals. However, on the other hand, critical issues persist, which have been a permanent focus of attention since the first community framework, which includes the modernization and innovation of the economy, employment, regional competitiveness and the qualification of the population. Note, for example, that the unemployment rate reached 17% in 2013, the highest ever in the Region and one of the highest nationally, the school dropout rate still remains above 28%, way above the country average (13%), while the rate of schooling at higher education level has not yet surpassed 10%.

Fundo de Maneio submitted an application to PO AÇORES2020 for the implementation of a Research & Development project in Companies, in line with the goals of the Intelligent Specialization Strategy of the Autonomous Region of the Azores and the Digital and Technological Agenda of the Azores. The NaTOUReza project was approved and will be co-financed by the FEDER, seeking to promote the company's competitive development based on specialized knowledge and new technical-scientific skills.

During the development of the project, various news and content produced will be disseminated. A web page will soon be made available with the fundamental information of the project.
